A Scholar‘s Story: Felipe Garcia-Fisher’s Pursuit of Academic Excellence

Felipe Garcia-Fisher’s journey toward academic excellence is fueled by the Lithia & Driveway scholarship. Born in Santa Cruz, California, Felipe spent his early childhood moving between Northern California and Santa Cruz. At the age of six, he moved with his mother to the Big Island of Hawaii, where he attended Konawaena High School. His mother, driven by a dream of owning a farm, established a coffee farm on the Big island. Felipe lived and worked on the coffee farm for eight years, gaining firsthand experience with coffee cultivation.

A Unique Journey to SOU

A family friend influenced Felipe’s decision to attend SOU. Intrigued by the affordability, the beautiful natural surroundings, and the small class sizes, Felipe decided to visit the campus. The visit solidified his choice—SOU was the perfect fit for his academic and personal growth.

As a first-generation student, Felipe appreciates SOU’s emphasis on nature and community. The small student-to-faculty ratio at SOU resonated with his hope for a personalized learning experience.  The small class sizes allow him to ask questions and receive individualized support from faculty.

Felipe says,

“I appreciate the supportive environment at SOU. The faculty genuinely cares about their students. That was important to me because, in high school, I didn’t have the same experience. I like that SOU has small classes.”

Academic Pursuits and Extracurricular Involvement

As a health and exercise science major with a minor in business, Felipe is pursuing his passion for fitness and his desire to help others achieve their health goals. Inspired by his sister’s success as a personal trainer, Felipe envisions a future where he can empower individuals to improve their physical well-being. His business minor will equip him with the skills necessary to build his own personal training business.

Beyond academics, Felipe is actively involved in various extracurricular activities, enriching his college experience. He enjoys utilizing the recreation center for workouts and basketball. He also plans to try out for the university’s basketball team next year. Felipe is also involved in intramural sports. He has also participated in conventions and fairs organized by the university and SOU’s Career Connections.

Scholarship Fuels Success for Students

The Lithia & Driveway scholarship plays an important role in Felipe’s ability to attend SOU. Faced with financial challenges, Felipe and his father were uncertain about how to cover college expenses. The Lithia & Driveway scholarship alleviated a significant portion of their financial burden. Indeed, beyond financial support, the scholarship provides valuable opportunities for internships, tours of Lithia Motors, networking with professionals, and developing leadership skills.

Felipe adds,

“I was surprised to learn I received the LAD scholarship. I am so grateful to be one of six LAD scholars. The scholarship makes it possible for me to go to college, and it will also help me with professional development and career advancement.”

Pivotal Moments

Reflecting on his high school years, Felipe pinpoints his sophomore year as a pivotal moment in his personal development. Joining the varsity teams for both basketball and volleyball fostered a sense of self-belief and leadership. In essence, the experience taught him the importance of teamwork, challenging his previously independent nature and encouraging him to embrace collaboration and support.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Felipe aims to further develop his leadership and communication skills, specifically in group settings where he can confidently share his understanding and contribute effectively. In addition, he also wants to learn how to hold himself and others accountable in team environments, promoting responsibility and ensuring collective progress. Further, Felipe recognizes the importance of emotional intelligence, striving to understand and navigate interpersonal dynamics effectively.

Felipe’s long-term goals include building a successful personal training business, potentially in Los Angeles, where he can leverage his skills and network to establish a thriving clientele. Also, he aspires to play on the SOU basketball team, believing in his potential to excel at the collegiate level. Finally, Felipe’s key priorities include maintaining strong relationships with family and friends, prioritizing academic excellence, and embracing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
