SOU’s Innovation & Leadership Program: A Catalyst for Community and Career Growth

Southern Oregon University’s Innovation and Leadership (INL) program has made a significant impact on the local community since its inception in 2015. Designed to cater to working professionals, the program offers a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum that equips students with the skills necessary to excel in leadership roles.

A Community-Focused Approach

One of the defining features of the INL program is its emphasis on community engagement. Students are encouraged to apply their learning to real-world challenges, often collaborating with local businesses, organizations, and government agencies. This hands-on approach not only benefits the community but also provides students with valuable professional experience.

Interdisciplinary Learning and Career Advancement

The INL program’s interdisciplinary curriculum, which includes courses from business, communication, psychology, and other fields, fosters a well-rounded understanding of leadership and organizational dynamics. Students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills that are essential for success in today’s competitive job market.

Recent Achievements and Future Goals

In recent years, the INL program has achieved several notable milestones. One significant accomplishment is the introduction of a combined undergraduate and MBA degree program. This allows students to earn both degrees simultaneously, saving time and money. Additionally, the program has seen a growing number of students pursuing leadership roles within local organizations and businesses.

Looking ahead, the INL program aims to continue its commitment to providing high-quality education and fostering community engagement. Future plans include expanding partnerships with local businesses and organizations, exploring new areas of interdisciplinary collaboration, and further enhancing the program’s online offerings.

Moneeka Settles, Program Coordinator, says about the program,

“I think the biggest impact of the program is that we’ve given an opportunity for people to finish their degrees while still building their careers here. They find their course material highly applicable to their work and we’re expanding their horizons in terms of what’s possible and how you might think about things differently. And we’re helping them to build their self-confidence and their intellectual engagement.”

Recently, the DeArmond Foundation provided a significant investment into the program by setting up scholarships for working students. Elvis Barber and Daphne Bramlett are two recipients of the DeArmond scholarship, which allowed them to stay in school over the summer.

INL Student Elvis Barber Thrives in SOU’s Program

Elvis Barber is a lifelong learner with a diverse background in construction and maintenance, and is nearing completion of his Bachelor of Science in Innovation and Leadership. His academic journey has been significantly impacted by the INL program’s supportive community and rigorous curriculum.

After relocating to Southern Oregon from Southern California, Elvis sought a stable career path. He initially pursued a degree in engineering but found the coursework too demanding and the subject matter less engaging than he anticipated. Recognizing his strengths in leadership and management, he pivoted to the Innovation and Leadership degree.

A Supportive Community for Lifelong Learning

The INL program’s interdisciplinary approach resonated deeply with Elvis. He found the coursework both challenging and rewarding, and the supportive community of fellow students and faculty members created a positive learning environment.

Barber explains, “The educators in this program are exceptional. They’re passionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely care about our success. From Erica Knott’s engaging teaching style to Dr. Parker’s mentorship and Jeremy Carlton’s infectious enthusiasm, they’ve created a supportive and inspiring learning environment. I’m incredibly grateful for their guidance and the positive impact they’ve had on my journey.”

One of the most impactful aspects of the program for Elvis has been the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share his passion for learning and personal growth. The INL cohort has provided him with a valuable network of peers and mentors who have supported him throughout his academic journey.

Support and Scholarships Make a Difference

In addition, the support of Moneeka Settles has been invaluable to Elvis’ journey. He says, “Moneeka Settles is the unsung hero of our program. She’s more than just an advisor; she’s a support system, a guide, and a cheerleader. Her dedication to helping us navigate our unique schedules and personal challenges is truly inspiring. She’s always there with a kind word, a helpful tip, or a reminder that we’re capable of achieving our goals.”

As Elvis prepares to graduate, he is excited to apply his newfound knowledge and skills to his career in project management for hydroelectric dams. He also plans to pursue an MBA in the future and eventually start his own business.

Elvis says about the DeArmond scholarship,

“The scholarship was instrumental in my academic success. It provided me with the financial flexibility to take summer courses and expedite my degree, allowing me to focus on my studies without the added burden of financial stress.”

INL Student Daphne Bramlett Balances Career and Education with Success

Daphne Bramlett, a working professional and community leader, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Innovation and Leadership. Balancing her full-time role as a Program Manager for ACCESS with her academic pursuits, Daphne is a testament to the program’s flexibility and support.

The INL program’s unique structure, which allows students to take accelerated courses and gives flexibility in coursework, has been instrumental in Daphne’s ability to progress through the program while maintaining her professional commitments. The program’s emphasis on evening classes and online options further accommodates the needs of working professionals.

Daphne has found the INL program to be a valuable learning experience, not only in terms of acquiring new knowledge and skills but also in developing meaningful relationships with her peers and instructors. She particularly appreciates the program’s emphasis on collaboration and community engagement. She’s already been able to apply the skills she’s been learning in the degree program in her community work.
