Gift to Music Honors Donor’s Agricultural Heritage

Kristy Henshaw Denman’s journey from a Willamette Valley farm to a passionate supporter of Southern Oregon University exemplifies the power of family and its influence on one’s aspirations. Growing up on the family farm near Brownsville, Kristy found inspiration in music, a passion ignited by her father. It was a love for music and children that led her to SOU, where she pursued a degree in education with a music specialist concentration.

There is an enduring bond between Kristy and the family farm. It is this heritage that is reflected in her commitment to establish an endowed faculty fellowship in music and scholarships to deserving Oregon students through a bequest.

After graduation, Kristy taught elementary school in Medford for 15 years, infusing her love of music into every subject. While she cherished her time in the classroom and the connections she made with her students, Kristy eventually felt pulled to pursue a different path.

Seeking adventure, Kristy became a flight attendant for Continental Airlines. Based in Denver and Houston, Kristy spent the next 15 years traversing the U.S. while her (late) husband Don practiced law in Medford. Despite the demanding travel schedule, Kristy thrived on the camaraderie and the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life.

Throughout her career, Kristy’s passion for music remained a constant. After singing with the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers, she joined the Rogue Valley Chorale in 1984, eventually serving as a board member. The community she found in the choir mirrored the sense of belonging she experienced at SOU. She is also a former member of the Rogue Opera board and currently serves on the board for the Craterian Theater.

One of the most remarkable moments of Kristy’s life was her involvement with the SOU Choraliers. Selected for a USO tour during the winter of 1970-71, Kristy and her fellow students performed for troops stationed across Asia. She established lifelong connections that have stayed with her and influenced her desire to give to SOU.

“I hope the scholarships will help students feel financially secure, creating a more conducive learning environment. While I can’t solve every student’s problem, I hope these scholarships can provide some relief,” said Kristy.
