Power of Education Inspires Philanthropy
Sally Jones and Ben Benjamin have dedicated their lives to giving back to the institution that has given them so much. They have a shared passion for education and athletics, and together, they have been active philanthropists, supporting athletics and the fine arts. Their commitment stems from a desire to inspire others and to make a positive impact in the community.
Sally held numerous roles at SOU over her 27-year career, including School Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, Women’s Athletic Director, and Associate Athletic Director. She and Ben met while she was coaching field hockey at the university.
Sally and Ben are connected to the university through their involvement with students, faculty, and staff, both current and retired. They have witnessed firsthand the power of education and the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive campus environment.
“We’ve had the opportunity to meet some wonderful people through our involvement with SOU athletics. Matt Sayre and Bobby Heiken, along with SOU coaches, have all become familiar faces in our lives. It’s been a great experience,” said Ben.
Sally and Ben’s commitment to giving back is rooted in their own personal experiences, according to the couple. They have both benefited greatly from their relationship with SOU, and they have a deep appreciation for the opportunities that the university has provided them.
Among their most significant commitments to the university is the creation of a fund to support female assistant coaches who are from traditionally underrepresented minority groups, something that is reflected in Sally’s groundbreaking work on Title IX. The couple have also supported upgrading facilities for softball and track and field.
In addition to their support of athletics, Sally and Ben are also passionate about the arts and music, believing that both enrich the lives of students and the community.
