Center for Sustainability
The SOU Center for Sustainability is a living, learning laboratory for students and faculty. The Center supports student capstone projects, applied faculty research and educational investigations into sustainable practices. The Center is a vital link between SOU and the Rogue Valley community, serving as a resource for sustainability knowledge, practices, research and education. Through thoughtful learning and practice, the Center fosters in its participants and visitors a vision of living and working sustainably on the planet. By promoting a sense of interconnectedness with all of nature, the Center is inspiring a new generation of leaders.
We invite all students, faculty and community members to join with the Center. Projects accomplished to date: a greenhouse, barn, apiary, orchards, vineyard, outdoor classroom, worm and compost bins, mushroom production and a fully operational vegetable farm. We serve the SOU community by offering CSAs, producing farm to table products purchased by SOU dining halls and hosting the Raiders Farm Stand serving fresh produce once a week, all summer, in front of the Stevenson Union. Students involved with these Center businesses learn management, marketing, agroecology, and other valuable skills while providing low cost local fruits and vegetables to the student body.
The Center strives to be self supporting. We leverage funds by selling our produce from the farm. Specific projects are supported by foundations grants and we solicit individual investments by patrons from the community. Originally launched by student fees though the Green Tag program, students continue to run and lead the Center’s vision. Our next major effort will be to build our education and research facilities on-site. This effort is being launched by a community investor underwriting the construction of a unique art/education studio. Please contact the Center if you are interested in participating or helping in any way. email@example.com;541-552-6399
