“I feel it’s critical that all students feel like they belong at SOU, that they can be successful, and most importantly, be themselves.”

A Letter from Christopher Geryak

As I reflect on my journey and what led me to Southern Oregon University to study business, I am reminded of a warm sunny day in Los Angeles two years ago. I sat at my desk contemplating which college I’d soon call home, and a kind and welcoming recruiter who had attended my high school popped into my head. I also thought of a friend who had shared with me about their experience attending SOU, and the way that both he and the recruiter passionately described SOU resonated and stuck with me. A few months later, I was on a plane headed to Ashland for my first-ever college visit—it ended up being my one and only.

From the colorful landscape and smiles across campus to the exciting sporting events to the array of rigorous academic programs, I knew SOU would be a welcoming and enriching place for me to pursue my dream of becoming a small business owner. Though a little bit nervous, I was accepted on the spot. A year later, classes began and I felt prepared and ready to take on college. It went better than expected, due to the tremendous support from faculty and staff and the great team at Disability Resources. I was able to finish the year with my highest GPA ever—a 4.0, well a 3.92. Close enough.christopher-geryak

By spring, I was striving in classes and had just finished volunteering as team manager for the men’s basketball team. Life was full and I was thriving at SOU when I found myself in a discussion with Tiana Gilliland, an Honors College student studying healthcare administration. We talked about our outlook and goals for SOU students and our desire to give back. We realized we were in sync and decided to run for student government together, throwing in our hats to become President and Vice President of the Associated Students of Southern Oregon University (ASSOU). It ended up being the best decision I have ever made.

From determining student fee policy to adding additional hours to the Student Recreational Center, students are deeply affected by ASSOU decisions. Becoming Vice President for ASSOU has been challenging and rewarding. I have been successful in the classroom, at work, and in service to the student body with the help of Tiana, the now ASSOU President, Dean of Students Carrie Vath, and a variety of faculty and staff. Everyone in the SOU community has been supportive in helping me to balance academics with service.

As a scholarship recipient, I have experienced firsthand the profound impact that generosity can have on a student’s journey. It seems like every day I learn from fellow students, faculty, and staff about the abundance of ways that support from charitable giving creates positive and meaningful impact across campus.

Please join me in coming together for SOU with a donation today.
