Lithia & Driveway Scholar Series
Scholar-Athlete Sierra Sam Fong Makes Her Mark in the Classroom & the Soccer Field
Sierra Sam Fong, first-year SOU student, athlete, and Lithia & Driveway Scholar, arrived at SOU in the fall of 2024 to a campus that felt like a long way from her home in Oahu, Hawaii. Yet, despite the distance, Sierra has found community and belonging at SOU. She’s also the first in her immediate family to venture out of state for higher education. The Lithia & Driveway scholarship has helped alleviate the financial pressure of college and the demands of NAIA soccer, allowing her to focus on her studies and her passion for the sport.
On the SOU soccer field, Sierra has found a solid connection with her teammates. The rigorous training schedule, though demanding, has become a source of discipline and a commitment to athletic excellence.
Sierra says,
“Joining the soccer team was the best decision I’ve made. The girls are incredible – funny, supportive, and we just click. It feels like I’ve found my people here, and that’s made all the difference in adjusting to life at Oregon.”
Beyond the soccer field, Sierra has discovered a newfound appreciation for sports photography, capturing the dynamic energy of other sports teams at SOU contributing to the SOU’s athletic visual narrative.
Sierra’s journey at SOU is still unfolding. As she navigates the complexities of college life, she is learning valuable life lessons – about independence and the power of community. Sierra hasn’t declared a major yet, but is considering media management or a field related to sports photography. After college, she hopes to return to Hawaii to be closer to family, though her career path will ultimately depend on job opportunities.
“The support I’ve received from SOU has been invaluable. I’ve felt genuinely cared for and supported throughout my first term. This has made a significant difference in my overall well-being and my ability to succeed both academically and athletically.”
The Lithia & Driveway program is a significant philanthropic partnership that provides substantial financial support to the university. This partnership includes a scholarship program specifically designed for first-generation and underrepresented students, aiming to increase access to higher education and foster leadership development.
The most impactful aspect of the Lithia & Driveway experience has been the scholarship support, which has been a tremendous help during a challenging financial period. It has also introduced her to a wonderful new group of friends from diverse age groups.
