Donors Make Doctors

Honors College senior and future physician, Mackenzie Murphy wants to thank everyone who has donated to Southern Oregon University to make her scholarship in the Honors College possible. “A lot of the students in the Honors College come from low-income backgrounds and most of us honestly would not be able to afford to go to a four-year college,” said Murphy.

A biology major with minors in chemistry and mathematics, Mackenzie plans to attend medical school and work as an emergency-room physician. Murphy is from New York, and when she came to SOU for a visit she fell in love with the university and the Ashland community. “Everybody here is so nice and supportive. My ideal goal is to go to OHSU and to practice in the Oregon area.”

All students in the SOU Honors College receive a scholarship. Acceptance to the program can be life changing for students. “I am deeply appreciative of each and every donor,” she said. “Their donations have helped so many students like me, and they have impacted the way we see our education and how well we are going to do in the future.”
